Symposium discusses history and future of Vietnam – Japan relations

A symposium discussing the history and future of Vietnam – Japan relations was held at Dong A University in Da Nang city on July 1 as an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries (1973-2023).

The event, organised in both virtual and face-to-face formats, attracted the participation of representatives from Da Nang city authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Japanese Consulate General in Da Nang, the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association, as well as experts, managers, scientists, researches, and lecturers from both countries.

Speaking at the event, Standing Vice Chairman of Da Nang City People's Committee Ho Ky Minh emphasised, that the Vietnam – Japan relationship not only features economic and trade cooperation, but it is a sincere friendship built on mutual trust, understanding and respect.

He reported that Da Nang City has established friendship and official cooperation with four Japanese cities, including Kawasaki, Sakai, Yokohama and Kisarazu. The Vietnamese city has also established cooperation with 15 other Japanese localities.

The event attracted 24 reports by more than 30 Vietnamese and Japanese researchers, which analysed the bilateral ties in various aspects of culture, diplomacy, defence and security, ODA provision, as well as cooperation in education, agriculture, and digital transformation.

Discussions at the symposium were divided into three sessions, focussing on the development of Vietnam – Japan ties over the past five decades; the outcomes of bilateral cooperation in history, archaeology, culture and religion; and the future of the relations between the two countries.
