The ceremony was jointly held by the Quang Tri government and Tien Phong Newspaper, the organiser of the National Marathon and Long-Distance Running Championship and Miss Vietnam 2024 beauty contest.
Speaking at the event, Tien Phong’s Editor-in-chief Phung Cong Suong affirmed that the great sacrifices of soldiers in the Quang Tri liberation campaign in 1972 contributed to the final victory in the struggle for national independence.
During the 81-day battle to defend Quang Tri Citadel, numerous sons of the nation sacrificed themselves to protect every inch of the motherland.
Their blood and bones have mixed with the ground and the Thach Han River, while their names and achievements have gone down in national history as a glorious milestone.
For his part, Quang Tri Vice Chairman Hoang Nam stated that the lantern release on the Thach Han River is an expression of the Vietnamese tradition of gratitude.
At the event, the delegates respectfully lit incense sticks, gently released fresh flowers and lanterns into the river to commemorate the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their youth for the motherland.
Earlier, the organisers of the National Marathon and Long-Distance Running Championship along 41 contestants of the Miss Vietnam 2024 beauty contest offered incense and flowers to fallen soldiers at the Truong Son and Route 9 martyrs cemeteries.
