Under the contract, signed at a ceremony on October 28, Hoang Van Vinh, chairman of the Vietnam-Russia Friendship Association in Russia’s Sverdlov province, will provide US$5,000 to the translation.
Chairman Vinh hails from Ha Tinh’s Nghi Xuan district.
The work will be translated by Dr Nguyen Huy Hoang of Moscow State University.
Secretary of the Ha Tinh Party Committee Nguyen Thanh Binh thanked Vinh for his contribution, describing it as a fitting homage to Nguyen Du (1766-1820), the author of Truyen Kieu and a native of Nghi Xuan.
The epic poem was written in Nom, the old Vietnamese ideographic script adapted from ancient Chinese.
The story recounts the life of Thuy Kieu, a beautiful and talented young woman forced to sacrifice herself to save her family.
Truyen Kieu, widely regarded as a masterpiece of Vietnamese literature, has been translated into 31 languages, including 10 versions in French.
