Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Nguyen Viet Tien, and the hospital’s director, Dr. Do Minh Thinh, personally performed the C-section. The surgery took about one hour. Three healthy babies were born to the joy of their families and medical staff at the hospital.

Of the three babies, one was born to the family of Chu Thi Huyen of Ky Khoi Commune, Dai Tu District and the twins belong to Tran Thi Dien of Ky Phu Commune of the same district.

The first steps in the IVF process were carried out by doctors at the hospital in late March of this year.

Thai Nguyen and the northern midland and mountainous have not been assisted with any reproduction centres yet, so most cases of infertility have been transferred to the central level. This event not only opens up a new opportunity for infertile couples in Thai Nguyen and the whole region, and also marks a new development in the province’s health sector.

The Reproductive Support Centre at the A Thai Nguyen Hospital was founded in August 2015 and became one of 20 reproduction assistance units across the country. Especially, it is the first assisted reproduction centre in the northern mountainous region, comprising twelve provinces.

To date, the total number of patients with infertility profiles in the centre has reached 3,674, of which 222 have received IVF. These figures are considered higher than in many local centres across the country.

In addition, more than 50 infertile women who became pregnant through IVF at the hospital are being given regular maternity monitoring.

Deputy Minister Tien said that compared with the local average IVF success rate of 20-30%, A Thai Nguyen Hospital’s rate of 50-60% was a positive number. However, Dr. Tien, who is an expert in this field, was also concerned on how to maintain the ratio in Thai Nguyen, as even at the central level the rate was only at 40-50%.
