Just a two-hour drive from Hanoi, my friends and I arrived at Dom Dom Farm, a lodging converted from traditional stilt houses of the Dao ethnic minority people. In the summer, the verdant green of rice, tea, and foliage fills the scenery from the roadside to the farm’s garden. Dai Tu District has 10 communes at the base of the eastern Tam Dao Mountains, with numerous streams, waterfalls, and rocky areas created by nature. This majestic and picturesque landscape is ideal for eco-tourism and adventure sports. Our visit this time was not just for soaking in the springs and camping but also for an exciting new experience in Thai Nguyen: canyoning at the Dong Tien waterfall cluster. Before our trip, our group was briefed by safety experts from the tour operator, Thai Nguyen Adventure, on how to use professional equipment and practice the necessary skills.
From the forest edge, our 5 km trekking journey was a relaxing experience amid ancient tea trees, bushes with vibrant purple myrtle flowers, and crystal-clear streams. The Dong Tien waterfall cluster came into view with its three tiers and frothy white waters. Guides and safety assistants quickly took their positions to support each member in canyoning and ziplining activities. Canyoning, an adventurous outdoor sport, is only available in a few locations in Vietnam such as Lam Dong, Thua Thien Hue, Lao Cai, and Thai Nguyen. The strong current creates resistance and noise, requiring canyoners to be focused and a bit daring, but the "reward" is well worth it with the thrill of overcoming challenges and immersing oneself in stunning wild nature. Exhausted, our group swam, paddled SUP boards, took photos, and enjoyed refreshments by the crystal-clear lakes at the base of the waterfalls.
The 2-day and 1-night trip exceeded our expectations, providing us with unforgettable experiences. Thai Nguyen has many interesting activities to invite adventure enthusiasts to conquer both nature and themselves.
