Also attending the meeting was General Nguyen Trong Nghia, Politburo Member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Member of the Central Military Commission’s Standing Board, and Director of the General Department of Politics of the Viet Nam People’s Army, along with other participants.
The meeting heard a summary report from the Ministry of National Defence's Department of Legal Affairs on the agenda for the first extraordinary session of the 16th National Assembly, as well as key contents of the draft law amending and supplementing several provisions of nine laws on military and national defence. These include the Law on National Defence, the Law on Officers of the Viet Nam People's Army, the Law on Professional Soldiers, Defence Workers, and Public Employees, the Law on Military Service, the Law on the Viet Nam Border Guard, the Law on People's Air Defence, the Law on Reserve Forces, the Law on Civil Defence, and the Law on the Militia and Self-Defence Forces.
Representatives of the Criminal Investigation Department and the Chemical Corps also presented matters relating to the draft revised Law on the Organisation of Criminal Investigation Agencies and the draft Law on the Prevention of the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction for National Assembly deputies to study and comment on during the session.
Concluding the meeting, General Phan Van Giang stressed that the first extraordinary session of the 16th National Assembly would involve a substantial workload. He called on deputies to strictly observe the National Assembly's rules and working regulations, comply fully with discipline governing public statements, and safeguard state and military secrets.
He also urged deputies attending the session to uphold their sense of responsibility and effectively exercise their duties and powers as National Assembly deputies by contributing constructive views to the matters under discussion. Their interventions, he said, should be carefully prepared, specific in content, clearly expressed, and consistent with the positions of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence, particularly on draft laws directly concerning the military.
