The decision was announced on November 16, stating that the school was created through merging the USSHs Faculty of Journalism and Communications with the Professional Centre for Journalism and Communications.

The school will have Associate Professor Dang Thi Thu Huong as its dean and Dr Nguyen Minh Son as its deputy dean.

The SJC has been established with the aim of enhancing the quality of journalism training in order to meet the more demanding requirements of media agencies and employers in the communications sector.

The school consists of four departments, with General Director of the Voice of Vietnam, Nguyen The Ky, invited to head the department of journalism and communications administration and Director of Vietnam Televisions VTV3 Channel Ta Bich Loan as head of the journalism department.

In addition to two undergraduate courses in journalism and PR-Advertising, the SJC offers three masters courses in journalism research, applied journalism and media administration, plus one doctoral course.

The school plans to offer an undergraduate honours programme and two masters courses in journalism and media management and the economics of journalism and media.
