Accordingly, the committee agreed to call off the 2021 season in order to make better preparations for the 2022 season, whilst contributing to COVID-19 prevention and control and minimising economic losses for clubs.

At the meeting, V.League 1 leaders Hoang Anh Gia Lai and second-placed Viettel FC consented to the cancellation plan, while a number of other teams which have representatives in the VFF Executive Committee, such as SHB Da Nang, Quang Nam FC and Song Lam Nghe An, also shared the same viewpoint.

With the decision, the results of the past matchdays will be abolished.

In addition to the cessation of the 2021 season, the VFF Standing Committee agreed to assign Hoang Anh Gia Lai to represent Vietnam at the 2022 AFC Champions League while Viettel FC and Quang Ninh Coal FC will compete in the AFC Cup arena.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai are currently sitting on the top of V.League 1 after 12 matchdays, followed by Viettel and Quang Ninh Coal. In the event that Quang Ninh Coal do not participate in the AFC Cup, Nam Dinh FC will be promoted to the slot.

The VFF’s approval of the V.League 1 cancellation came within nearly a day following Nam Dinh FC and Hai Phong FC’s official dispatches asking for the cessation of the tournament or financial support to help the clubs participating in V.League 1 maintain their operations.
