The visit is an important political activity which takes place on the occasion of the Vietnam – Cambodia Friendship Year and the 55th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations (1967-2022).
As two neighbouring countries located on the Indochinese peninsula in the Lower Mekong region, Vietnam and Cambodia have established a long-standing and close-knit friendship.
The two countries have stood side by side with each other during their national struggles for independence as well as in their causes of national construction and development.
The good bilateral neighbourliness, traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation has been continuously nurtured and fostered by the leaders and peoples of the two countries to become a common asset of the two nations.
The relationship between the two countries has been developing stably in recent years. The two countries designated 2022 as the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Year in celebration of the 55th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties (June 24, 1967-2022).
The exchange of delegations at all levels have increased sharply following the two countries reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic and the success of Cambodia’s commune/ward council elections for the fifth tenure, with the overwhelming victory of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), through which the CPP maintains its leadership in both legislative, executive and judicial branches.
The two sides have coordinated to organise many important activities to celebrate the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Year.
Economic cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia maintained positive growth. The two-way trade turnover reached 9.54 billion USD in 2021, up 79.1% over 2020, and totalled 7.08 billion USD in the first seven months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 17.8%. Vietnam maintains the lead in ASEAN and is among the top five countries in the world with the largest direct investment in Cambodia.
The bilateral cooperation in defence, education-training, science-technology, tourism, and people-to-people exchange has been strengthened. Relations between localities with shared borderlines have also been fostered.
Vietnam ranked first among countries with the largest numbers of visitors to Cambodia in the first half of 2022.
The cooperation between the two legislative bodies of the two countries has developed well on both bilateral and multilateral levels. The two sides have maintained meetings of high-level delegations to share experiences in legislative affairs, and in supervising and making decisions on important issues of the country.
At regional and international inter-parliamentary forums, the National Assembly delegations of the two countries have maintained exchanges and consultations, and coordinated in regional and international issues of mutual concern.
The visit will be a chance for the two countries to assess the recent outcomes of bilateral cooperation, particularly between their legislative bodies, and discuss specific measures to boost cooperation in the new period.
As an important activity in the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Year, the official visit to Vietnam by Cambodian Senate Samdech Say Chhum and the Cambodian high-ranking delegation aims to consolidate the traditional friendship and deepen the cooperation between the two countries and especially between the two legislative bodies.
That Cambodian Senator Samdech Say Chhum, and President of the Cambodian National Assembly Samdech Heng Samrin, have both paid official visit to Vietnam in the Vietnam – Cambodia Friendship Year affirms that Cambodia values and wants to strengthen ties with Vietnam, while consolidating political trust between the two Parties, States and legislatures.
Welcoming the official visit of Cambodian Senate Samdech Say Chhum and Cambodian high-ranking delegation, Vietnam asserts the Party and State’s consistent policy of attaching great importance to and giving top priority to consolidating and developing traditional friendship relations, furthering cooperation in a deeper, more practical and more effective manner.
The visit aims to contribute to strengthening the close relations and political trust between the two Parties, States and peoples in the context of complicated changes in the global and regional situations.
