This is President Luong Cuong’s first multilateral foreign activity at the world’s most important global forum, thereby affirming Viet Nam’s strong commitment to multilateralism and the core values of the United Nations.
The visit takes place at a significant time when Viet Nam and the United States celebrate 30 years of normalisation of relations and two years of establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Over eight decades of formation and development, the UN has become the largest multilateral organization on the planet with the participation of most independent countries.
From 51 original member states, the UN now has 193 member states and has become a comprehensive system, operating in all areas from conflict resolution and prevention, disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, counter-terrorism, refugee protection, environmental protection, sustainable development, to promoting democracy, human rights, gender equality, and socio-economic development.
With its important achievements, the UN has been affirmed by the international community as a global organisation with a very important role in international political life and an indispensable foundation for a more peaceful, prosperous and equitable world.
Viet Nam officially joined the UN on September 20, 1977. After nearly half a century of companionship, the multifaceted cooperation between Viet Nam and the UN has been constantly strengthened.
On the journey of building, defending the Fatherland and developing the country, the solid foundation of the relationship with the UN has become an important lever and resource for Viet Nam to carry out the renewal process, opening the door to international integration.
Viet Nam has increasingly made substantial contributions in terms of ideas and human resources to the UN, leaving a strong mark on the largest multilateral organisation on the planet.

This is also an opportunity for Viet Nam to affirm its position, demonstrate its responsibility and promote initiatives in addressing global non-traditional security challenges.
President Luong Cuong’s working trip takes place at a time of special significance, as 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN.
