Vietnam advance to semi-finals at Southeast Asia U-23 tournament

Vietnam defeated the Philippines 1-0 on August 22 to top Group C and secure a semi-final match against Malaysia in the Southeast Asia U-23 Championship.

The only goal of the match was scored by Nguyen Huu Tuan, who made a bold finish with a cross from Nguyen Dang Duong in the 18th minute.

The Philippines did not have their first opportunity until the 47th minute when Luis Lucero took advantage of the wide space to attempt to finish but it was not strong enough to beat Vietnam’s goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan.

With the victory over the Philippines, Vietnam’s U-23 team are Group C winners and will face Malaysia in the first semi-final at 4pm on August 24.

The second semi-final between Thailand and Indonesia is scheduled to take place on the same day at 8pm.

The 2023 Southeast Asia U-23 Championship is hosted by Thailand from August 17 to 26. Vietnam are the defending champions.
