Vietnamese culture promoted to international friends in Brunei

As part of the ongoing efforts to enhance cultural diplomacy and promote Viet Nam's image abroad, the Vietnamese Embassy in Brunei, in collaboration with International School Brunei (ISB), organised a cultural exchange event on the afternoon of July 2 to showcase Vietnamese literature and traditional hand embroidery art.

Students from grades 7 to 12, representing various nationalities, have the opportunity to experience Viet Nam's traditional hand embroidery techniques.

During the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to Brunei Tran Anh Vu presented a selection of Vietnamese literary works and cultural studies to the ISB library. The donated books included renowned literary works that have been translated into English, such as "Diary of a Cricket" (De men phieu luu ky) by To Hoai, and "I See Yellow Flowers in the Green Grass" (Toi thay hoa vang tren co xanh) and "Ticket to Childhood" (Cho toi xin mot ve di tuoi tho) by Nguyen Nhat Anh.

Ambassador Tran expressed his hope that ISB students and international friends would warmly receive and engage with Vietnamese literature and cultural studies, as well as the films adapted from these literary works.

As part of the programme, ISB faculty and 30 students from grades 7 to 12 participated in a hands-on session learning traditional Vietnamese hand embroidery techniques. They decorated their works with distinctive patterns of the H’Mong ethnic group, under the guidance of Le Thi Hong Ngoan (the Ambassador’s spouse), Maisarah Nguyen (founder of the Rattan House handicraft enterprise), and Pham Thu Phuong (a representative of the Vietnamese community in Brunei).

Carrying the message of preserving traditional crafts while protecting the environment, all materials used at the event were either naturally sourced or recycled, including old newspapers, used plastic bottles, and dried plants.

Le Thi Hong Ngoan and the instructors shared their intention to continue exploring and incorporating natural materials found in Brunei into Vietnamese handicraft products, while also contributing to cultural exchange activities between Viet Nam and Brunei.
