Tuyen, who has secured Vietnam’s only Tokyo Olympic berth in the sport, took the top honour in the women’s 49kg category after beating Uzbekistan’s Madinabonu Mannopova 25-24 in their final match on Thursday.

The victory has opened hopes for Vietnam to compete for an Olympic taekwondo medal this year as Asian athletes often prevail in light weight divisions. En route to the gold medal, Tuyen defeated another 2020 Olympic competitor from Taiwan (China), Hung Yu Ting.

Another Vietnamese fighter, Tran Thi Anh Tuyet, grabbed a silver medal in the women’s 57kg class following her loss to a Korean rival in the title decider.

The 2021 Asian Taekwondo Championships took place in Lebanon from June 14 to 18, with the participation of 337 athletes from 28 countries and territories worldwide.

Vietnam was represented by three fighters and one expert at the tournament.
