The project seeks to reduce the rate of water losses to 32% by 2015 and 25% by 2025. Expansion of water supply coverage services to the suburbs, improving sanitation, and raising the quality of life for people in rural areas are also goals for the project.
Two new water supply plants, Thu Duc 3 and Tan Hiep, with an output capacity of 300,000 cubic metres per day each and a water pipeline system will be funded using VND15 trillion by 2015. Two new pumping stations namely Binh Chanh and Nha Be will also be built.
Currently, the city’s total running water output is about 2.2 million m3 per day. It is predicted that the figure will increase to 2.84 million m3 by 2015 and 3.7 million m3 by 2025.
The city plans to use raw water from Tri An, Dau Tieng, and Phuoc Hoa Lakes as backup sources to make drinking water if the Dong Nai and Saigon Rivers which have long been supplying water for the city, are affected by pollution and salinity intrusion.
In addition, small-scale and household wells are expected to cease operation due to the city’s policies restricting the exploitation and use of groundwater.
