* Yamandu Orsi was sworn in Saturday as Uruguayan president for a five-year term. Orsi, from the left-wing coalition the Broad Front, took the oath of office in parliament a little more than three months after defeating his center-right rival Alvaro Delgado in a tightly contested election.

* China's total number of copyright registrations in 2024 surpassed 10.63 million, up 19.13 percent year on year, the National Copyright Administration (NCA) has announced.

* The U.S. Department of Defense is sending about 3,000 soldiers to the southern border with Mexico, the Washington Post reported Saturday, quoting U.S. defense officials as saying.

* British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday. Britain and Ukraine have agreed a loan of 2.26 billion pounds (2.84 billion USD) to support Ukraine's defense capabilities, according to Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko.

* Israel has accepted the U.S. proposal for a temporary ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza for the Ramadan and Passover holidays, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement early Sunday. The Muslim holy month of Ramadan began on Friday and will last until March 30, while the Jewish Passover week will be marked from April 12 to 20.

* King Abdullah II of Jordan on Saturday urged an end to the dangerous Israeli escalation in the West Bank. In a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the king stressed the need to establish a political path toward a just and comprehensive peace in the occupied Palestinian territory, according to a statement from the Royal Court.

* Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with Palestinian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Mustafa in Cairo on Saturday to discuss plans for the early recovery and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, according to a statement released by the Egyptian cabinet.

* The deputy head of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) on Saturday called for urgent international support for Lebanon to restore its security and revitalize its economy, according to a statement by Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA).

* Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed on Saturday to resume military operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) if its promises are not fulfilled.

* The number of people killed in the latest cholera outbreak in Angola has risen to 201, the country's Health Ministry announced. A total of 5,574 people have been infected since early January, the ministry said in a press release on Friday.

* Authorities of the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) on Sunday warned residents in northern NSW to prepare for damaging winds, large surf and heavy rainfall with Tropical Cyclone Alfred expected to cross the coast later this week.

* The wildfire in Ofunato City of Japan's Iwate Prefecture is continuing to spread, with the burned area expanding to approximately 1,800 hectares as of 6 a.m. local time on Sunday.
