* Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday called three federal byelections for April 13, a game-changer that could determine whether his minority Liberal government can secure a majority in the House of Commons.

* Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ali Khamenei, was selected as Iran's new supreme leader, Iran's Assembly of Experts announced on Sunday. In a statement, the assembly confirmed Mojtaba Khamenei's election as the country's third supreme leader, citing "the decisive vote of the respected representatives" of the assembly.

* U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Sunday that Iran's new supreme leader "is not going to last long" without his approval.

* Colombian President Gustavo Petro called for electoral transparency as legislative elections kicked off Sunday, urging citizens to go out and vote.

* The Republic of Korea (RoK) and the United States on Monday kicked off joint military exercises, called Freedom Shield (FS). The annual springtime war game will continue for 11 days through March 19, according to the RoK’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

* Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Sunday that Slovakia is prepared to take over the baton from Hungary, if necessary, to block the European Union (EU)'s loan to Ukraine.

* Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index lost over 2,800 points on Monday, marking the third largest point drop in history. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 2,892.12 points, or 5.20 percent, from Friday at 52,728.72.

* U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and entrepreneur Jared Kushner, son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, plan to visit Israel on Tuesday, media reported Sunday, adding that they will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the visit.

* U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the decision to end the operation against Iran would be made "at the right time," media reported. He added that the decision would be made jointly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to The Times of Israel.

* The Israeli air force struck Iran's internal security command centers and missile launch sites in a new wave of attacks targeting Iranian targets on Monday, according to a statement from the Israeli military.

* Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters on Sunday urged Muslim states in the region to prevent U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iranian fuel and energy facilities, warning that Tehran would respond with similar actions if strikes continue.
