>>> Wrestler Nguyen Thi Lua wins ticket to Rio Olympics
>>> Ngung qualifies for Rio Olympics
Hang eased past Lee Yu-mi of the Republic of Korea in the quarterfinals of the women’s 48kg category before winning the semifinal clash against So Sim-hyang from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
Despite losing to Zhuldyz Eshimova of Kazakhstan in the final, Hang officially qualified for the world’s largest sporting event in Rio - under the rules of the qualification tournament, the two semifinalists of each category are eligible for the Olympic Games.
This is the second Olympic ticket won by Vietnamese wrestlers so far. Earlier on March 18, another wrestler Nguyen Thi Lua also made it through to Rio after cruising into the final of the women’s 53kg category.
The ongoing qualification tournament in Kazakhstan sees the absence of most of Asia’s strongest athletes as they have already qualified for the Games via the 2015 World Championships, held in Las Vegas last September. Lua and Hang took advantage of the opportunity to win Olympic slots for Vietnamese wrestling.
Vu Thi Hang is the ninth Vietnamese athlete to secure an Olympic ticket, after Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming); Hoang Xuan Vinh and Tran Quoc Cuong (shooting); Nguyen Thanh Ngung (athletics); Nguyen Thi Lua (wrestling); and three male weightlifters.
