2012 National Phu Dong Sports Festival wraps up

Nhan Dan - The 8th National Phu Dong Sports Festival 2012 wrapped up yesterday in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho after sixteen days of competition.

The Ho Chi Minh City team secured the top spot in the medal tally with 98 gold medals, 52 silvers and 54 bronzes, followed by Hanoi with 38 golds, 47 silvers and 65 bronzes, and hosts Can Tho in third place with 38 golds, 38 silvers and 40 bronzes.

This year’s national festival drew the participation of more than 6,500 athletes who competed for 476 sets of medals in 19 events, including track and field, swimming, football, table tennis and crossbow, among others.

The 9th National Phu Dong Sports Festival 2016 will be held in the central provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An.

The festival, which is held every four years, aims to highlight the importance of physical education and promote sports among students nationwide. It also offers a good opportunity to discover and nurture young talents for Vietnamese national sports teams in the future.
