In the all-China final, the world number one beat her compatriot, and world number two, Sun Yingsha, 4-2 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on 29 July.
It was a tough match with 20-year-old Sun opening up the attack and winning the first game 9-11. Chen fought back in the next two games, winning them 11-6, 11-4, but then lost 5-11 in the fourth. By the 5th game the 27-year-old had rallied and won it 11-4, and then held her nerve in the last game winning it 11-9.
Japan’s Ito Mima, and world number three, made history when she took bronze after beating the number 26 seed, Singapore’s Yu Mengyu, 31, by 4-1.
With the latest gold medal won, along with the previous two golds in swimming, the Chinese sports delegation have risen to the top of the medal table after the sixth day of competition at Tokyo 2020, with 15 golds, seven silvers and nine bronzes.
Hosts Japan also have 15 golds, thanks to two golds today in Judo by Shori Hamada (women's -78 kg) and Aaron Wolf (men's -100 kg), but behind the Chinese delegation.
The US also won three more golds in swimming and gymnastics today to continue to chase China and Japan. Currently, the US are in third place with 14 golds, 14 silvers and 10 bronzes.
Today, the Vietnamese sports delegation had four athletes competing in three sports, with Vietnamese archery and rowing bid farewell to this Olympics after Dinh Thi Hao and Luong Thi Thao finished 3rd in the final of Lightweight Women's Double Sculls Group C and ranked 15th overall, while archer Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu failed to progress in men's individual 1/32 eliminations after losing 1-7 to Tang Chih-chun (Taiwan, China). Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien ranked 30th out of 31 swimmers in the women's 800m freestyle qualifying round with a time of 9:03.56.
The Vietnamese delegation has only two athletes left in Tokyo 2020. Tomorrow, swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang will participate in his final event in men's 1,500m freestyle, while runner Quach Thi Lan will compete in the women's 400m hurdles in athletics on July 31.
