Driving force to promote Quang Nam’s economic development

The central province of Quang Nam has mobilised many investment sources to develop transport infrastructure to create a breakthrough in socio-economic development. The upgraded transport system has created favourable conditions to attract investment, create jobs, increase people’s income and contribute to economic growth.

Quang Nam has all types of traffic including road, railway, river, sea and air. In the future, when the local transport network is connected synchronously, it will create a driving force to foster stronger socio-economic development.

A push from key projects

The coastal road connecting Hoi An City with Chu Lai Airport in Nui Thanh district is being completed to put into operation. This large-scale coastal route is nearly 70km long and nearly 30m wide, with a total investment of over 5 trillion VND (213.2 million USD).

Upon its completion, it will become an important link in the entire national coastal road, creating conditions for the province to attract investment and boost socio-economic development.

Chairman of the People’s Committee of Quang Nam province Le Tri Thanh said that the road named Vo Chi Cong has an important position, becoming the driving force for economic development in the east of the locality. Previously, the Cua Dai Bridge and the coastal road from Duy Xuyen district to Tam Ky city (phase 1) were put into use in March 2016, creating a strong push for economic development in the southern region of Hoi An. At that time, the two projects strongly attracted domestic and foreign investors, soon after their operation, dozens of tourism and service projects were licensed in the province.

Chairman of the People’s Committee of Thang Binh district Vo Van Hung said, that since Vo Chi Cong Road was built, this land has been “awakened” with many large projects licensed. The operation of new tourist sites, production and business projects, helps generate jobs for thousands of people and improve the lives of local people.

Besides the completion of the strategic coastal road and concreting nearly 6,000km of rural roads, Quang Nam has also invested in building a series of key traffic projects such as Giao Thuy Bridge spanning the Thu Bon River, National Highway 14H connecting the two districts of Duy Xuyen and Nong Son, a road connecting Chu Lai port with Da Nang-Quang Ngai expressway, and National Highway 40B – the section from Tam Ky to Tien Phuoc. These projects are expected to connect traffic between the plains and mountains in the province, as well as facilitate goods exchange with other localities in the region and the entire country.

According to the Director of the Department of Planning and Investment of Quang Nam province, Nguyen Quang Thu, thanks to the upgrade of the transport infrastructure system, the province has attracted more investors and large projects. Quang Nam has escaped from a poor province to become a middle-income province in the central region.

The province’s GRDP reached 69.11 trillion VND in 2022, ranked 11th among provinces and cities across the country and 4th among 14 provinces and cities in the north-central and central coastal regions. The economic structure of the province has shifted towards a positive direction with industry and construction accounting for 35%, trade service occupying 31.7% and agriculture accounting for 13.4%.

Creating linkage for development

Despite being repaired and upgraded, the transport system in the province is still not synchronised and many bridges and roads have not been connected to the main traffic routes. Thus, the great potentials in the western mountainous region have yet to be fully exploited.

Secretary of Dong Giang District Party Committee Do Tai said, that many eco-tourism sites were built in the district, but a modest number of tourists have travelled to the mountainous area. For example, the Dong Giang - Gate of Heaven tourism site was built on a large scale, with a total investment of trillions of Vietnamese dong, but it has only received about 70,000 visitors after one-year operation. “The number of tourists to mountainous areas remains low because the roads are degraded and have not been repaired or upgraded in time, greatly affecting economic development, especially tourist attraction,” Do Tai noted.

The province attaches great importance to the transport network, so it is urgently building and completing the Provincial Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, the detailed planning of land and seaport waters in the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, and others.

In particular, the province is focusing investment resources on perfecting a synchronous and modern socio-economic infrastructure system, ensuring linkage, inter-regional connectivity and urban development. At the same time, it will complete the planning of the Chu Lai seaport into a national seaport and submit to the Prime Minister for approval in opening a new route in the Cua Lo estuary (Nui Thanh district), to handle ships of 50,000 tonnes. The province also calls for investment in developing port services and logistics associated with the Chu Lai seaport.

Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Le Tri Thanh said Quang Nam will take advantage of capital sources, focusing on promoting the system of Ky Ha seaport and Chu Lai airport, while accelerating the progress of land clearance and the construction of infrastructure of industrial parks, in line with the development orientation of the Chu Lai Economic Zone. In addition, the province continues to review and merge administrative units at district and commune levels to gradually expand urban space and build ecological and smart urban areas along the main roads.

It also aims to build several urban areas and concentrated coastal tourist areas to form a tourism chain from Thang Binh to Nui Thanh, along the Truong Giang River and Vo Chi Cong route, in combination with boosting community-based tourism, traditional craft villages, and eco-tourism.
