The delegates observed one minute of silence to commemorate late President Ton Duc Thang – a leader of the working class and a shining example of loyalty and revolutionary morals who devoted his life the national revolutionary cause and his fellow countrymen.

Comrade Ton Duc Thang was born in My Hoa Hung Village, Long Xuyen Province (now An Giang Province), to a family with a rich tradition of patriotism. He joined the patriotic struggle at a very young age and became a member of the Vietnamese Communist Party in 1930.

He was elected President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam) in 1969. He was awarded the Gold Star Order in 1958 for his contributions to the country, making him the first to receive the highest decoration of the Party and State.
