Trade unions of the Presidential Office and the Government’s Office have raised funds in support of the north-western provinces hit by the recent floods and landslides.
On August 7, President Tran Dai Quang, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, along with officials and employees of the Presidential Office donated two days’ payment to support people in the flood region.
The same day, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Deputy Prime Ministers Truong Hoa Binh, Vuong Dinh Hue and Vu Duc Dam raised money to support the flood victims. The initial amount of donations at the launch was well over VND400 million.
The donation has been channelled through the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee.
On the same day, the Ministry of Information and Communications sent two delegations to Yen Bai and Son La provinces to visit local flood victims.
Recent heavy rains and flash floods have taken the lives of 26 people and left 15 others missing and 27 injured in northern mountainous provinces.
The victims are from Yen Bai, Son La, Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Cao Bang, according to the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.
Son La province had the highest number of fatalities with 12 while Yen Bai had the highest number of missing persons with 13.
Torrential rains and floods also swept away 231 houses, damaged 245 houses, submerged 338.5 hectares of rice, and made 398 families leave their homes to safer places.
The intense floods also destroyed over 25,000 cubic metres of national roads, 117,706 cubic metres of provincial and district roads; damaged 145 irrigation works and 2,072 metres of river dike, causing well over VND940 billion (US$41.36 million) in economic losses in the provinces.

In the morning of August 8, the Ministry of Public Security launched a donation campaign to share with losses from the recent flood and the difficulties of people in disaster areas.
The Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) decided to spend nearly VND1.6 billion to support local people and authorities of the three most severely damaged provinces of Yen Bai, Son La and Lai Chau.
On Tuesday morning, BIDV Yen Bai branch donated VND650 million to Yen Bai provincial People's Committee, of which VND500 million is for the direct support of Mu Cang Chai district and VND150 million to support families with members who have died at VND10 million per family.
According to a report by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Yen Bai province, by the morning of August 8, the province received nearly VND2.75 billion in financial support and other aids from relevant organisations and individuals.
Also on Tuesday morning, a delegation of Ho Chi Minh City who was accompanied by authorities led by Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee cum Chairwoman of the municipal People's Council Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam, visited the flooded area of Mu Cang Chai and presented VND 1.2 billion for disaster victims.
Earlier on August 7, Hanoi municipal Fatherland Front Standing Committee announced that the capital city has decided to support the northern mountainous provinces damaged by natural disasters.
Accordingly, Hanoi supports the most severely damaged provinces of Son La and Yen Bai VND1 billion each, while Lai Chau, Bac Can, Cao Bang, Dien Bien and Lao Cai receiving VND500 million each. The above amount has been deducted from the Hanoi Relief Fund.
The Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam has asked credit organisations and the State Bank branches in the provinces and cities affected by the recent flood to immediately implement measures to support local people.
Credit institutions shall direct branches and transaction bureaus to review and sum up losses of borrowing customers to apply measures to support and remove difficulties for them, such as restructuring the time limit for repayment, considering interest rate exemption and reduction, and creating favourable conditions for customers to borrow new loans to restore production after the floods.
