Journalist Huu Tho passes away

Journalist Huu Tho, former member of the Party Central Committee and former Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan (People) newspaper, passed away in Hanoi on August 13 at the age of 84.

The news of his passing was reported the same day in a special statement released by the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Committee (CPVCC), the National Assembly, the CPVCC Commission for Communication and Education, the CPVCC Office, Nhan Dan Newspaper and the Party Committee of Phan Chu Trinh district, Hanoi.

Journalist Huu Tho, whose real name is Nguyen Huu Tho (pen names: Huu Tho, Nhan Nghia, Nhan Chinh) was born on January 1, 1932 in Hanoi. He was a student of Buoi High School (now Chu Van An High School) in Hanoi before joining revolutionary activities in 1945. He made significant contributions to the Party and the nation.

He began his writing career as a professional investigative journalist in August, 1957, specialising on the fields of agriculture and rural areas.

He also held several key positions such as Head of the CPVCC Ideology - Culture Commission (now the CPVCC Commission for Communication and Education); Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper; Assistant to the Party General Secretary; Member of the CPVCC (7th and 8th tenures); and Deputy of the National Assembly (9th and 10th tenures).

He was honoured with the Independence Order (First Class); Labour Order (First Class); Gold Medal of the International Organisation of Journalists and several other honourable orders.

A high-level funeral was held for Huu Tho at the National Funeral House today, August 14.

The funeral saw the presence of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong; former Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh; State President Truong Tan Sang; Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Sinh Hung; Politburo member Dinh The Huynh, Head of the CPVCC Commission for Communication and Education; Politburo member Pham Quang Nghi, Secretary of the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee; Thuan Huu, Member of the CPVCC, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper and Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists' Association; among others.

He will be buried at the Vinh Hang Cemetery, Hanoi later the same day.
