The search and rescue team said on June 9 that his body was discovered at an altitude of 2,800 metres, over one kilometre from pylon T4 of the cable system.

They said he may have died three days earlier.

The search and rescue team are working with the Fansipan Cable Car Company to bring Webb’s body out of Hoang Lien National Park, but it could take hours due to inhospitable terrain.

Webb and his girlfriend Baugham arrived in Sapa on June 2 and stayed at Quyet Tinh Hotel.

Early morning the next day, Webb began scaling Vietnam’s highest mountain solo from Sin Chai village while his girlfriend remained in Sapa.

Baugham said the last time she received a message from Webb was at 6 am on June 4, in which Webb said he had injured his arm and leg.

A notoriously treacherous climb to the 3,143-metre summit of Mount Fansipan, Sin Chai is only taken by experienced climbers, not for those who are inexperienced tourists and lack necessary equipment.

Travellers who want to conquer Mount Fansipan usually take the route from Tram Ton, from which they can walk or use the cable car.

In February three British tourists died in a climbing accident at the Datanla waterfall near the resort town of Da Lat.
