The 13.3 kilometre extension road, including three bridges Dong Tru, Dong Hoi and Phuong Trach, runs from the Bac Thang Long - Van Tri Urban Area to the intersection between National Highway 1 and National Highway 5.

Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai at the opening ceremony said the road extension would help improve traffic in the north of Hanoi and ease traffic between the city centre and northwestern provinces, Quang Ninh province and Hai Phong city.

It is also expected to boost the development of nearby industrial parks including Bac Thang Long-Van Tri, Dong Anh-Co Loa, and Gia Lam-Sai Dong-Yen Vien, added Hai.

The road is 68.5 metres wide with the longest bride, Dong Tru, standing 1,139 metres long and 55 metres wide.

The National Highway 5 extension project is one of Hanoi’s 37 key transportation projects. Construction began in 2005 with total costs estimated at approximately VND6.7 trillion (US$315 million).
