'Nordic Assistance to Vietnam' celebrates 20th anniversary

The Nordic Assistance to Vietnam/ Norwegian Church Aid (NAV/NCA VN) held a press conference in Hue on November 23 to mark 20 years of assistance to Vietnam.

Country Representative in Vietnam for NAV/NCA VN, Eivind Archer, said that Norwegian Church Aid is an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) operating in areas of poverty reduction and hunger eradication, gender equality, HIV/AIDS prevention, climate change adaption and natural disaster mitigation in 29 countries around the world.

Over the past 20 years, NAV/NCA VN has undertaken activities in Vietnam in the fields of health care, climate change, gender equality, improving the quality of life for disadvantaged communities, and enhancing the transparency of project management, with a total aid of approximately US$1.2 million per year.

The most outstanding achievements of the NAV/NCA VN recorded in Vietnam are the health programmes to strengthen access to healthcare for people living with HIV/AIDS in 17 prisons in 12 provinces, and the programme to promote the role of religion in HIV/AIDS prevention.

NAV/NCA VN is also the first NGO in Vietnam running projects to cope with climate change in Thua Thien - Hue province with a typical project 'Swim towards disaster risk reduction', which provides necessary skills for 119 teachers and 1,696 primary pupils at 30 schools in Hue and Quang Tri province.

NAV/NCA VN pledged to continue giving assistance to Vietnam and contributing to the sustainable development of the country, Country Representative in Vietnam for NAV/NCA VN said.
