Outstanding activities and events of the education and training sector in 2022

In 2022, the education and training exerted efforts in responding to the COVID-19 epidemic, taking safety measures to reopen schools across the country. In addition, the sector has achieved some positive results in digital transformation in education and training, as well as achievements in international arenas and educational integration with the world.

1. Reopening schools, bringing educational activities back to normal

The year 2022 was the third year in a row that the COVID-19 epidemic has taken place, severely affecting all aspects of life. In the context of the country's general difficulties, the education sector has begun to take safety measures to reopen schools across the country. By April 2022, school activities had returned to normal.

2. Implementing support packages for teachers and learners affected by the COVID-19 pandemic

Many support packages have been implemented by the Government and the education sector, such as credit support packages for pupils and students; credit support packages with preferential interest rate loans for non-public preschool and primary education institutions; support from 2.2 million or 3.7 million VND for non-public preschool and primary school teachers facing difficulties due to COVID-19; investment support package to deploy digital transformation.

3. Decisions and solutions to overcome the shortage of teachers and teachers leaving work

The Ministry of Education and Training is conducting a review of legal documents, policies and regulations for teachers, to ensure that teachers can promote their creativity and ability. The Ministry has also considered aspects related to ideological work, building a cultural environment at schools and renovating school administration, to ensure that teachers have a safe working environment.

4. Implementing the 2018 General Education Programme as planned at 3 levels with the participation of all localities

The year 2022 marked the first half of the implementation of the 2018 General Education Programme, with a huge amount of work completed in the context of the sector continuing to respond to the negative impact of the COVID-19 epidemic. In the 2022-2023 school year, a new general education programme is being implemented in grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, grade 6, grade 7, and grade 10.

5. Vietnamese students win excellent results at the International Olympiads

In 2022, seven teams of excellent Vietnamese students with 38 students participating in international Olympiads, won prizes, including 13 Gold Medals, 12 Silver Medals, 8 Bronze Medals and 5 Certificates of Merit (Consolation Prize).

6. The high school graduation exam in 2022 was implemented safely and with quality

In 2022, the high school graduation exam was held across the country with 2,243 test points, 42,293 exam rooms and 998,863 candidates. This is the first year the Ministry of Education and Training organised online registration for candidates. The registration of candidates in the online form was safe and convenient.

7. Digital transformation in education and training achieved many positive results

In 2022, the application of information technology, to serve the high school graduation exam and university enrolment, was implemented synchronously and thoroughly, from exam registration, and enrolment aspiration registration, to fee payment, admission examination and confirmation of admission.

8. Celebrating 40 years of the Vietnamese Teachers' Day

The Ministry of Education and Training organised many meaningful activities, such as meeting and honouring 400 typical teachers, representing more than 1.6 million teachers and educational administrators in the country, etc.

9. University autonomy goes into depth

On October 24, 2014, the Government issued Resolution No. 77/NQ-CP, on piloting the renovation of the operating mechanism for public higher education institutions in the 2014-2017 period. Accordingly, the higher education system has made great strides, resources have been unleashed and the capacity of training institutions has been promoted.

10. School culture and school safety are concerned, directed and a premise created for extensive implementation in the coming year

On June 1, 2022, the Prime Minister issued Directive No. 08/CT-TTg, on strengthening the implementation of building school culture. In August 2022, the Ministry of Education and Training coordinated with the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Education, to organise a national conference to implement this Directive. The implementation of school culture and school safety has made many positive changes in the past time, but in reality, more drastic solutions are still needed.

11. The Ministry of Education and Training chairs the 12th ASEAN Education Ministers’ Meeting and participates in the United Nations Transforming Education Summit

In 2022, as the rotating chair of ASEAN education cooperation for the 2022-2023 tenure, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam successfully organised the 12th ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting (ASED) and related meetings in Hanoi, from October 11-14, with the participation of education ministers, senior officials and experts from 10 ASEAN member states and eight partner countries.

12. Vietnamese education increases the international ranking index

Vietnam's university ranking index is constantly increasing. Six Vietnamese universities have been listed in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023, which includes nearly 1,800 universities across 104 countries and regions, the largest and most diverse of its kind to date.
