This is a landmark event, affirming the efforts of Vietnamese cinema to integrate into the world’s most prestigious film arena.
Previously, on June 13, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 1830/QD-BVHTTDL on the establishment of the National Council for Film Selection for the Preliminary Round of the Oscars for the 2025–2026 Term. The council consists of five members who are prestigious managers, artists, directors, producers, and screenwriters. Its chair is Dang Tran Cuong, Director of the Department of Cinema.
In line with Article 16 of the AMPAS regulations on selecting a national submission, the council convened, discussed, and voted. The result was that Red Rain received strong endorsement and was chosen to represent Viet Nam in the preliminary round of the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Oscars.
Set against the backdrop of the historic 81-day-and-night defence of Quang Tri Citadel, Red Rain vividly and movingly recreates one of the nation’s most heroic chapters, honouring the courage and sacrifices of Vietnamese soldiers. The film stands out for its profoundly human storytelling, meticulously crafted cinematography, emotional music, and persuasive performances from the cast.
Director Dang Thai Huyen, who has long been devoted to war-themed cinema, skilfully balances an epic spirit with a modern and accessible perspective. This combination enables the work to resonate not only with domestic audiences but also with international viewers.
The submission of a Vietnamese film to the 98th Oscars is an important opportunity to introduce and promote Vietnamese cinema more widely to the global community. It also affirms the growing stature of Viet Nam’s film industry in the integration process, while opening further avenues for exchange and learning from world cinema.
According to the ministry’s decision, the People’s Army Cinema will work with the Department of Cinema to complete the required dossier and send film copies with English subtitles to the Oscars organisers within the stipulated deadline.
Over the past three decades, several Vietnamese films have been submitted in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, including The Scent of Green Papaya (1993), The White Silk Dress (2006), Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass (2016), and Hai Phuong (2019). Although none has won so far, each entry has marked an important milestone, helping Vietnamese films gain greater recognition on the international stage.
