Remains of 81 Vietnamese fallen soldiers repatriated from Kampong Speu, Cambodia

The Military Command of An Giang Province announced on July 15 that the Special Task Force of An Giang Province and its counterpart in Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia, had signed a handover protocol for the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who perished during different wartime periods. The remains were recovered by Team K93 under the An Giang Provincial Military Command during Phase XXV (the 2025–2026 dry season).

According to a report by Team K93, despite the passage of time since the war, the scarcity of information on burial sites, changes in terrain and landmarks, and the harsh conditions of the dry season, the unit's officers and soldiers remained steadfast in their mission. They verified 35 information sources and manually excavated 42 locations, moving more than 32,200 cubic metres of soil to recover the remains of 81 fallen soldiers, none of whom have yet been identified.

This brings the total number of remains recovered by Team K93 in Kampong Speu Province since 2001 to 1,388.

In addition to executing its search and recovery mission, Team K93 also actively promoted defence diplomacy and community outreach during its deployment in Cambodia. Its activities included providing free medical examinations and medicines to local residents, as well as visiting and presenting gifts to local authorities, armed forces, and residents during the 2026 Chol Chnam Thmay traditional New Year celebrations.

These practical activities have helped fortify ties and mutual trust between the task force and the authorities and people of Kampong Speu Province, creating favourable conditions for the search and recovery of the remains of fallen soldiers.

At the ceremony, the Special Task Force of Kampong Speu Province signed the handover protocol and formally transferred the remains of the 81 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts to the Special Task Force of An Giang Province for repatriation, memorial services, and burial in Viet Nam.

Addressing the ceremony, Le Van Phuoc, Vice Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee and Head of the provincial Special Task Force, commended the determination and perseverance shown by Team K93's officers and soldiers. He also expressed profound appreciation to the Special Task Force, authorities, armed forces, and people of Kampong Speu Province for their continued cooperation, information sharing, and support, which enabled the unit to fulfil its mission.

He expressed the hope that the Cambodian side would continue to support Team K93 in effectively executing the 500-day intensive campaign to search for and recover the remains of fallen soldiers, facilitating their return to their homeland.

Toch Polyva, Deputy Governor of Kampong Speu Province and Head of the provincial Special Task Force, commended Team K93's sense of responsibility and perseverance throughout its mission in the province.

He also affirmed that Kampong Speu Province would continue to collaborate closely with the team and provide favourable conditions for it to complete the search for and recovery of the remaining fallen soldiers, thereby helping preserve and further fortify the traditional solidarity and friendship between Cambodia and Viet Nam.
