Shared aspiration for a unified and peaceful Viet Nam

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Viet Nam’s first General Election to elect the National Assembly (January 6, 1946 - 2026), Cambodian veteran journalist Khieu Kola granted an interview to Nhan Dan Newspaper’s correspondent in Cambodia about the significance of the event, as well as the outstanding achievements of the Vietnamese National Assembly over the past 80 years.

While assessing the historical significance of January 6, 1946 — a landmark event when Vietnamese people, for the first time, exercised universal suffrage after gaining independence — journalist Khieu Kola highlighted President Ho Chi Minh’s historic role in the Tan Trao Congress of People's Representatives — the precursor of the Vietnamese National Assembly.

After the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam was born on September 2, 1945, Viet Nam held its first General Election on January 6, 1946. The event marked the first time Viet Nam had a National Assembly, quite similar to the establishment in 1945 of Cambodia's National Assembly.

The National Assembly is the highest representative body of the Vietnamese people throughout the journey of national construction and defence. The universal aspiration of the entire nation is a unified and peaceful Viet Nam.

According to the Cambodian journalist, the Vietnamese National Assembly made important contributions to the struggles against French colonialism and American imperialism, and later played a crucial role in the country's post-war reconstruction under the socialist-oriented market economy model.

The Vietnamese National Assembly deputies have been united in heart and mind, building the nation in a unified manner and promoting national solidarity.

The Vietnamese National Assembly has always upheld its motto and role as the centre of national solidarity, upholding the image of a peace-loving Viet Nam that has never supported war.

From the perspective of a veteran journalist specialising in regional and international issues, Khieu Kola sees the Vietnamese National Assembly as the entity, the heart that unifies the country, with its precursor being the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam and now the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.

The Vietnamese National Assembly has flexibly adjusted its operational direction according to specific periods, in line with regional and global political situations. The Vietnamese National Assembly is currently a member of many prestigious international organisations worldwide.

Journalist Khieu Kola expressed his impressions of Nguyen Huu Tho (1910-1996), late Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly and a renowned lawyer known to a wide circle of Cambodian intellectuals.

Khieu Kola noted that, as Viet Nam's highest legislative body, the Vietnamese National Assembly has undertaken many notable positive activities over the past 10 years.

He highly commended the Vietnamese National Assembly for thoroughly implementing the Vietnamese bamboo diplomacy policy, initiated by the late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

According to the Cambodian journalist, alongside the Party and State, the Vietnamese National Assembly has played an important role in Viet Nam's recent institutional reforms, when its provincial-level administrative units were cut from 63 to 34, comprising six centrally administered cities and 28 provinces.

Khieu Kola appreciated that the Vietnamese National Assembly has always maintained excellent assistance and cooperation with the Cambodian National Assembly.

A handover ceremony was held in mid-June 2025, in Phnom Penh, for the new administrative building of Cambodia’s National Assembly as a gift from the Party, State, and people of Viet Nam to the Cambodian State and people.

The 12-storey structure, built at a total cost of 25 million USD, features Khmer architectural elements, with modern facilities. It will house the Secretariat, specialised committees, and meeting halls of the Cambodian National Assembly, enhancing its administrative capacity.

Construction began in late 2021, and the building was officially inaugurated on November 21, 2024, in a ceremony co-chaired by Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Khuon Sudary and Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man

At the time of border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, the Vietnamese National Assembly called on both sides to exercise restraint and persistently seek solutions to restore peace. This is evidence of its peace-loving spirit, for the National Assembly was born and matured amid the smoke and fire of war, understanding better than anyone the value of independence, freedom, and peace.
