Sheffield United seal Premier League promotion with 2-0 win over West Brom

Sheffield United secured automatic promotion to the Premier League with three games to spare after Wednesday's (Apr 26) 2-0 home victory over West Bromwich Albion ensured they will finish second in the Championship behind champions Burnley.

The Blades will return to the Premier League after two seasons, having been relegated in the 2020-21 campaign in which they finished bottom of the table.

* Brentford condemned Chelsea to a fifth defeat in five games in all competitions under interim coach Frank Lampard on Wednesday as an own goal by Blues' captain Cesar Azpilicueta and a strike by Bryan Mbeumo handed the Bees a 2-0 win in the Premier League. The loss left toothless Chelsea 11th in the Premier League table, stumbling towards possibly their worst campaign since the 1993/94 season

* A bullet header from Joel Matip gave Liverpool a 2-1 Premier League win over West Ham United that moved them above Tottenham Hotspur and back into the European places after a frenetic end-to-end game at the London Stadium on Wednesday (Apr 26). The Reds are in sixth spot in the table on 53 points, ahead of Spurs thanks to their far superior goal difference and one point behind Aston Villa with a game in hand.

* The FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United on June 3 will kick off at 3pm local time (1400 GMT) at Wembley, the Football Association said on Wednesday.

* Nottingham Forest moved out of the relegation zone as Brazilian Danilo scored his first goal for the club to help seal a 3-1 Premier League victory over Europe-chasing Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday (Apr 26).

* Barcelona wasted a golden opportunity to extend their lead at the top of LaLiga as they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday thanks to goals in each half from Alvaro Garcia and Fran Garcia. With seven games to play, Barca are top of the league on 76 points, 11 ahead second-placed Real Madrid.

* Atletico Madrid recovered from conceding an early goal to beat Mallorca 3-1 in LaLiga on Wednesday, a result that put them two points behind their second-placed city rivals Real Madrid. With seven games to play, third-placed Atletico climbed to 63 points, closing the gap to Real, who lost 4-2 at Girona on Tuesday.

* According to British media, the police had requested an earlier kick-off time from its recent slot as a late afternoon clash to ease pressure on the transport system. It will be the first time in 12 years that the match will start at 3pm.

* Inter Milan midfielder Federico Dimarco's first-half goal earned his side a place in the Coppa Italia final for the second year in a row after a 1-0 home win over Juventus in their semi-final second leg on Wednesday (Apr 26) secured a 2-1 aggregate victory. It was the first time in six attempts that Inter had got the better of Juve in a Coppa Italia semi-final, ending the visitors' streak of three consecutive finals.

* Honda's Marc Marquez will miss the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend as he continues to recover from a hand injury, but hopes to be fit for next month's race in France, his team said on Wednesday. Marquez underwent surgery to his right hand after a collision in the season-opening race in Portugal last month and did not race in the last round in Texas.

* Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu withdrew from the Madrid Open shortly before she was due on court to play Viktoriya Tomova in the first round on Wednesday (Apr 26). The 20-year-old British player cited an injury to her right hand as the reason for her withdrawal.

* MotoGP has cancelled its first race in Kazakhstan due to the circuit not being ready and will not replace it on what is now a 20-round calendar, the sport said on Wednesday. Kazakhstan last September agreed a five year deal for the Sokol International Racetrack outside Almaty to stage MotoGP races. The inaugural race had been scheduled for July 9 as the ninth round.

* Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas has returned to Barcelona's squad for Thursday's second leg of their women's Champions League semi-final against Chelsea after a knee injury sidelined her for almost 10 months. Putellas last played for Barca in their 6-1 cup final win over Sporting de Huelva in May 2022, before she tore her anterior cruciate ligament and was ruled out of the women's European Championship.
