Storm Cempaka moves northwestward, towards China

At 4am on July 20, the centre of Storm Cempaka, the third storm to hit the East Sea/South China Sea so far this year, was at about 220 km southwest of Hong Kong (China), packing winds of 90-100 kilometres per hour (level 10), with shock at level 12.

For the next 24 hours, the storm will move north-westwards at speeds of 5 kilometres per hour. By 4am on July 21, the centre of the storm will be at about 22.2 degrees north latitude and 111.8 degrees east longitude on the mainland southwest of Guangdong Province (China), with strongest winds near the centre at level 9 (75-90 kilometres per hour), with shock at level 11.

The danger zone in the East Sea in the next 24 hours will be at 19.5 degrees north latitude and 111.0-114.0 degrees east longitude.

Over the next 24-48 hours, the storm will move westwards at speeds of 5 kilometres per hour. By 4am on July 22, the storm’s centre will be about 22.1 degrees north latitude and 110.3 east longitude on the mainland southwest of Guangdong Province (China), with strongest winds near the centre at level 8 (60-75 kilometres per hour) and shock at level 10.

For the following 48-72 hours, the storm is likely to change direction and move southwestwards at a speed of 5 kilometres per hour, gradually weakening into a tropical depression.

As of 4am on July 23, the depression’s centre was at about 21.0 degrees north latitude and 109.9 degrees east longitude on Leizhou Peninsula of China, with strongest winds near the centre at level 7 (50-60 kilometres per hour) and shock at level 9.

The sea areas between the provinces of Binh Thuan and Ca Mau and the southern part of the East Sea (including the Spratly Archipelago) have strong southwest winds and high sea levels from 2-4m.

In the area of the East Sea (including the waters of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos), the sea from Binh Dinh to Ca Mau, from Ca Mau to Kien Giang, there will be rain showers and thunderstorms.
