Widespread heatwave pushes up electricity demand

Severe heat across a large part of Northern and Central provinces has resulted in a sharp increase in electricity consumption, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) said on May 21.

According to the National Load Dispatch Centre, national electricity consumption reached its highest level since early this year on May 20.

National electricity consumption was recorded at 750.4 million kWh on May 20 while electricity consumption in the Northern region reached 320 million kWh and consumption in Hanoi increased to 75.8 million kWh.

In the face of continuing heat this summer, EVN recommends that agencies, offices, production facilities and households should continue to focus on the safe and economical use of electricity.

According to the National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, a heatwave is spreading in Northern and Central provinces with highest temperatures between 35-39 degrees Celsius, with some places seeing over 39 degrees Celsius.

Hanoi is suffering scorching heat during the day with highest temperatures between 38-40 degrees Celsius.
