Viet Nam and Bhutan officially established diplomatic relations in 2012, marking a pivotal milestone in the history of their bilateral ties. Over more than ten years, the two countries have worked to strengthen relations and friendship through exchanges of delegations, meetings, and working sessions at various levels.

Bhutanese leaders have expressed admiration and high appreciation for Viet Nam’s reform, openness, and socio-economic achievements.

They have expressed hopes for the two countries to share lessons learned and expand cooperation opportunities in sectors with significant potential.

This serves as important preparation and motivation for both nations as they enter new phases of development, particularly when Bhutan seeks economic growth alongside cultural preservation, environmental protection, and promotion of happiness, while Viet Nam strides decisively into an era of national advancement.

Rather than measuring economic development by conventional GDP, Bhutan uses the Gross National Happiness index. In fast-paced modern life that often causes stress, the values of happiness that Bhutan upholds are truly worthy of respect.

This unique feature has led to growing interest among Vietnamese travellers in exploring the “Happy Kingdom” of Bhutan, creating favourable conditions for the rapid development of tourism between the two countries.

Regarding economic partnership, Viet Nam and Bhutan are working together to boost bilateral trade. The annual two-way trade stands at roughly 20,000 USD, and the potential for deepening economic ties remains vast.

Viet Nam typically exports wood, machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts to Bhutan, also supplying agricultural produce, food, seafood, agricultural machinery, electronics, and electric vehicles. Moreover, many large and capable Vietnamese enterprises can invest in Bhutan’s infrastructure, telecommunications, and service sectors.

Buddhist and spiritual tourism represents a prominent highlight of bilateral cooperation. Vietjet Airlines of Viet Nam has organised flights on specialised routes carrying tourists to Bhutan. The operation of direct flights between Viet Nam and Bhutan is a significant impetus for tourism collaboration between the two countries.
