In the first official competition day of the third Asian Para Games so far, Trung also set the new Games record in the event by clocking in at one minute and 48.91 seconds.
Thai athlete Kaewkham Voravit finished second with 01:59.14, followed by Anderson Jamba from Malaysia with 02:20.94.
Trung also smashed his own record of 01:50.91, set at the previous Games in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, in 2014. The new result is also even better than his record at the 2015 ASEAN Para Games in Singapore (01:48.98).
The 1982 born was rewarded with VND40 million from the sponsor Herbalife Vietnam for his excellent achievement.
Also in swimming, female athlete Vi Thi Hang won another bronze in the women's 50m freestyle S7.
The two medals helped the Vietnamese sports delegation rank 7th on the medal tally after the first day of competition. The top three belong to China (11 golds), Japan (four golds) and Uzbekistan (two golds).
On Monday, the Vietnam’s medal hopes are placed into swimmers Vo Thanh Tung, Nguyen Thanh Trung and Trinh Thi Bich Nhu, as well as Cao Ngoc Hung and Nguyen Be Hau in discus throw.
