The Ministry of Construction has added Gia Binh International Airport and Tho Chu Airport to the plan through a streamlined procedure.

According to the Ministry of Construction, the adjustment of the plan was carried out based on the Politburo’s guidelines, the Government’s resolutions, and the Prime Minister’s directives. The new plan aims to expand the scale and improve operational capacity, in line with the rapidly growing demand for air transport.

Specifically, by 2030, the country is expected to have 32 airports, an increase of 2 airports compared to the previous plan. The vision for 2050 is for the network to expand to 35 airports, including 14 international airports and 21 domestic airports.

Notably, the Ministry of Construction has added Gia Binh International Airport and Tho Chu Airport to the plan through a streamlined procedure. Simultaneously, the preparation and adjustment of detailed plans have been accelerated; from the beginning of 2024 to date, 14 out of 22 airports have had their expansion plans approved, with the remaining ones expected to be completed before the end of 2026.

The plan adjustments are based on realistic forecasts. Accordingly, by 2030, the demand for air passenger transport is estimated to reach over 191 million passengers per year; cargo transport is approximately 3.75 million tonnes per year.

To realise this goal, the plan focuses on major directions such as: reviewing and improving the airport network; The Ministry of Construction is researching and developing specialized airports to serve tourism, national defense, security, and search and rescue; while simultaneously developing an aviation ecosystem with logistics centers, training, maintenance, and a synchronised transportation network.

The Ministry of Construction also emphasised maximising the mobilisation of non-budgetary resources and encouraging localities to invest in potential airports through public-private partnerships (PPP).

Currently, the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam and related units are urgently finalising the revised planning documents, incorporating feedback from ministries, sectors, and localities. Upon completion, the Ministry of Construction will report to the Government and submit them to the Politburo for consideration, ensuring consistency and uniformity in the national transportation infrastructure development strategy.
