Established in March 21, 1890 during the French colonial rule, the city was previously known as Thai Binh town until it was granted third-grade city status in 2003. In December 12, 2013, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signed a decision to classify the city as grade-two.
After ten years of construction and development, the city has achieved a range of accomplishments in socio-economic development to significantly improve the lives of people.
Thai Binh city has an area of 6,771 ha with 19 administrative units including ten wards and nine communes and a population of about 268,000 people.
In 2013, the city recorded a total production value of over VND7.5 trillion (US$352.5 million). Economic growth last year reached the relatively high rate of 12.82% and total State budget collection in the year was at nearly VND1.3 billion, up 51.3% compared with 2012. Income per capita is on the rise, standing at VND49.5 million in 2013.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai praised the achievements of the city gained during its renovation, construction and development, thus contributing to the development of Thai Binh province in particular and the Red River Delta in general.
The Deputy PM urged the locality to make use of its advantages for economic development, building new-style rural areas, and mobilising resources to develop the infrastructure system to turn the city into a green, modern and dynamic urban place with sustainable development.
