Thailand’s rice exports rise sharply in nine months

Thailand earned 95.23 billion baht (2.54 billion USD) from exporting 5.41 million tonnes of rice in the first nine months of this year, up 40% in volume and 36% in value from the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

Iraq became the biggest buyer of Thai rice in the reviewed period, importing 15.4 billion baht worth of the product.

Other big export markets for Thai rice in the first nine months were the US, South Africa, China and Hong Kong (China).

Thailand is now the world’s second-largest rice exporter after India.

The Rice Exporters Association of Thailand forecasts the country will ship 7-8 million tonnes of rice this year as the weakening baht boosts competitiveness over India and Vietnam.

In the framework of the 14th World Rice Conference hosted by Phuket on November 15-17, Thailand’s foreign trade agencies will introduce the country’s rice export potential.
