Viet Nam Coast Guard assists earthquake relief efforts in Philippines
In recent days, several localities in Cebu City, the Philippines, have suffered severe damage by Super Typhoon Bualoi and a 6.9-magnitude earthquake, which killed 69 people, injured more than 150, and destroyed over 3,500 houses. The total damage is estimated at more than 1.7 billion Philippine peso (PHP).

Accordingly, the Ministry of National Defence has directed the working delegation of the Viet Nam Coast Guard, led by Major General Tran Quang Tuan, Commander of Coast Guard Region 2, who is also head of the delegation aboard ship CSB 8002, which was on a visit and exchange programme with the Philippine Coast Guard, promptly carried out humanitarian activities to assist local authorities and people in disaster recovery.

On October 8, officers and soldiers of the Viet Nam Coast Guard delegation coordinated with officers and staff of the Philippine Coast Guard to travel more than 100 kilometres from the anchorage of ship CSB 8002 to Bogo Province – one of the hardest-hit localities by the earthquake – to carry out relief activities.

The delegation handed over one tonne of rice, instant noodles, dry food, and bottled water to local authorities and people. At the same time, medical officers on ship CSB 8002 also coordinated with Philippine Coast Guard medical staff to provide free medical examinations and distribute medicines to local people affected by the disaster.

Although the assistance from the Viet Nam Coast Guard delegation and ship CSB 8002 was modest compared to the immense losses suffered by local authorities and people, their actions carried profound meaning, demonstrating the Vietnamese people’s spirit of solidarity, friendship, and compassion toward the international friends. These efforts also helped spread the image of the Viet Nam Coast Guard officers – the soldiers of Uncle Ho – in the new era.
