The signing of the deal between Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Duong Quang and Comorian Ambassador to Vietnam Mahmoud Aboud is a significant step in the development of trade ties between the two countries.
The rice deal is also of great significance to boosting Vietnam rice exports to Africa, which currently accounts for 20% of the country’s rice export revenue.
This is the third rice supply agreement that Vietnam has signed with an African country following Sierra Leone and the Republic of Guinea.
According to Mahmoud Aboud, Comoros imports between 70,000 and 80,000 tonnes of rice annually and each person consumes an average of 100 kilogrammes of the grain per year.
In addition to rice, Vietnam can also export other commodities to Comoros such as garments, construction materials, automobile parts, motorbikes and agricultural machinery.
