Le Van Cong claimed the first title for Vietnam as he successfully lifted 180kg in the men’s 49kg weight class.
Nguyen Binh An secured the second gold medal in the men’s 54kg category with a lift of 180kg.
The silver medal was won in the women’s 50kg weight class by Dang Thi Linh Phuong, who conquered the 97kg level.
The five-day tournament gathers 300 athletes with disabilities from 41 countries and territories around the world. It is part of the three World Cup events (held in Kuala Lumpur, Dubai and Rio de Janeiro) by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) that will allow athletes to increase their Paralympic rankings for slots in the 2016 Rio Paralympics in Brazil this September.
The Vietnamese delegation, headed by trainer Nguyen Hong Phuc, features seven athletes competing in the men’s 49kg, 54kg, 59kg and 65kg categories, and the women’s 45kg, 50kg and 55kg.
With the two gold medals won on Wednesday, Le Van Cong and Nguyen Binh An are running the high possibilities of securing official tickets to the Rio Paralympic Games.
On the same day, Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia Pham Cao Phong visited and presented congratulatory flowers to Vietnamese powerlifters for their brilliance on the first day of competition.
