World News in Brief: June 21

U.S. and Iranian negotiators started talks Sunday at Buergenstock mountain resort in central Switzerland on implementing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the two sides to reach a final deal. The talks mark the first round between the two sides after the signing of the MoU aimed at ending conflict on all fronts, including Lebanon.

* Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir met an Iranian delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of U.S.-Iran technical level talks being held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, on Sunday, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

* Germany's Left Party on Saturday elected Ines Schwerdtner and Luigi Pantisano as its new co-leaders during a federal party congress in Potsdam. Schwerdtner, who has been the party's co-chair since October 2024, was overwhelmingly confirmed in her position with 85.7 percent of the votes, according to the party's latest election results.

* Polls opened across Colombia on Sunday for the second round of the country's presidential election, with voters choosing a president and a vice president for the 2026-2030 term.

* The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) on Sunday declared the ruling Prosperity Party (PP) the winner of the country's seventh general election, clearing the way for it to form a new government.

* Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Sunday met with his Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis at the Buergenstock mountain resort in central Switzerland before the scheduled talks with the United States.

* Switzerland on Saturday said that it continues to provide a "discreet and reliable setting" to facilitate talks at the central Swiss resort of Burgenstock on the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran.

* Bangladesh reported 220 new dengue cases and two new deaths on Sunday, taking the tally to 4,900 and the death toll to nine so far this year. According to data released on Sunday by the Directorate General of Health Services, 1,703 dengue cases were recorded so far in June, after 714 in May.
