Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru on Sunday announced that he will step down as the head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), just weeks after his ruling coalition suffered a historic defeat in a July election. He also said he would not stand as a candidate in the upcoming LDP leadership election triggered by his resignation.

* Irfaan Ali on Sunday was sworn in as president of Guyana at the presidential residence in the capital Georgetown, officially beginning his second presidential term, said local authorities.

* Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has announced a new government comprising 26 ministers and six state secretaries, retaining Ousmane Sonko as prime minister while replacing the ministers of interior and justice.

* Cambodia and the Philippines on Monday signed three documents, promoting bilateral cooperation in air connectivity, higher education, and combating cross-border crime.

* U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the White House is ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia amid stalled peace talks to halt the Ukraine crisis.

* Russia launched 805 drones and 13 missiles in an overnight attack on Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force said Sunday. As of 8:30 a.m. local time (0530 GMT) Sunday, the air defense had intercepted 747 combat and decoy drones, along with four Iskander-K cruise missiles, said the Ukrainian Air Force in a Facebook post.

* The Afghan Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Organization for Sustainable Aid in Afghanistan to support returning refugees, the ministry announced in a statement on Sunday.

* At least 50 Palestinians were killed across the Gaza Strip by the Israeli army on Sunday, the Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported. According to WAFA, 46 of the victims were in the northern part of the enclave.

* Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a bus in Jerusalem on Monday, injuring about 15 people, before the two were shot dead, Israeli authorities said.

* Hamas said on Sunday it was ready to discuss the release of all hostages in exchange for an end to the war in Gaza, a full Israeli withdrawal, and the creation of an independent Palestinian committee to govern the enclave.

* Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met in Cairo on Sunday with Jibril Rajoub, secretary-general of the Central Committee of the Palestinian Fatah movement, to discuss Egypt's efforts to end the war in the Gaza Strip.

* Tapah, the 16th typhoon of this year, made landfall in south China's Guangdong Province on Monday morning, forcing school closures and the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.

* The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, a group known as OPEC+, on Sunday decided to ramp up oil output by 137,000 barrels per day (bpd) in October.

* China's total goods imports and exports in yuan-denominated terms increased 3.5 percent year on year in August, marking the third consecutive month that both exports and imports achieved simultaneous growth, official data showed Monday.

* The Republic of Korea's jobless claims fell for the second consecutive month due to lower demand in the construction and manufacturing industries, government data showed Monday. The number of new applicants for job-seeking benefits fell 6.3 percent over the year to 81,000 in August, continuing to slide since July, according to the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

* Bangladesh's inflation decreased to 8.29 percent in August from 8.55 percent in July, according to official statistics on Sunday. Food inflation increased slightly to 7.60 percent in August. In July, food inflation was 7.56 percent.

* Eleven people were missing after a canoe capsized Friday on the Sassandra River in Buyo town, southwestern Cote d'Ivoire, a senior official has said.
