20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China closes

The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China officially concluded at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on October 22 after seven working days under the chair of Party General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping, with the attendance of more than 2,300 delegates.

At the closing session, the delegates voted to approve the resolutions of the Congress on the Report of the 19th Central Committee, the work report of the 19th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the revised Party Charter of the Communist Party of China.

Speaking at the closing session, Party General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping affirmed that the congress completed the entire work programme, with decisions and results that will play a role in guiding and protecting the country. It is an important guarantee for the comprehensive construction of a modern socialist country, promoting national revival and achieving new victories in the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

He emphasised that the delegates must firmly believe in the ideals, study and comprehension of the Party's theories, lines, mottos and policies; study, observe, master and protect the Party Charter; and devote energy and wisdom to the cause of the Party and the people; while at the same time, calling on the entire Party to raise the banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, to unite and lead the entire people to strive to realise the goals and tasks set out by the Congress.

The resolution of the Congress determined that, thanks to the results obtained in the last 5 years of the term and 10 years of the new era, China has stepped forward on a new path, comprehensively building a modern socialist country towards to the goal of national revival by the middle of this century. The central task of the Communist Party of China from now on is to lead the people in comprehensively building a modern socialist power, and to promote national rejuvenation through the Chinese-style modernisation path.

The revised Party Charter at this congress included additional content on “two establishments”: establishing the core position of Xi Jinping in the Central Committee of the Party and in the entire Party, and establishing the guiding role of Xi Jinping's thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era; emphasising the role of Xi Jinping’s thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.

In addition, the Party Charter also adds tasks to carry out Chinese-style modernisation to promote national revival, towards common prosperity, promote high-quality development, and accelerate the formulation of a development layout to promote the spirit of fighting and self-revolution, and to step up the study of Party history and a number of other important contents.

The Congress elected the 20th Central Committee, consisting of 205 full-time members, 171 alternate members, and the 20th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, consisting of 133 members.

As planned, after the closing session, the 20th Central Committee will hold the first plenary meeting to elect the Politburo, the Politburo Standing Committee, and the General Secretary.
