Vietnamese durian is mainly shipped to China, accounting for 84.3% of the total export value of Vietnamese durian.
According to the Customs Department of Lang Son province, more than 1,600 batches of durian (nearly 60,000 tonnes) have been handled through Huu Nghi International Border Gate, entering China as of May 30. In May alone, more than 17,500 tonnes of durian was transported through the Huu Nghi Border Gate.
According to the Vietnam Trade Promotion Office in Chongqing, China, dragon fruit, banana, durian, and mango are the main fruits that Chongqing imports from Vietnam. In the first quarter of 2023, the city imported over 26 million USD of durian from Vietnam, nearly 8.9 million USD of dragon fruit and 101,000 USD of Vietnamese bananas.
According to the Kunming Customs Department of China, Kunming Customs and the Vietnamese side started implementing mechanisms to exchange quarantine certificate samples and recognise the certificates of each other on June 1. The Kunming Customs will also apply measures to reduce customs clearance time, related to health declarations, goods handling, payment via QR Code and others, to facilitate the customs clearance of durian.
Vietnam now has 293 durian growing areas and 115 packing facilities that have been granted export codes by China to officially enter this market.
“With growing demand from the Chinese market, Vietnam’s durian export may reach 1 billion USD this year and enter the group of billion-dollar agricultural exports,” said Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association Dang Phuc Nguyen.
