Faculty of Southern Khmer Language inaugurated

Nhan Dan – Tra Vinh University held an inauguration ceremony on June 23 to celebrate the opening of a Faculty of Southern Khmer Language – Culture – Art in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan.

The faculty is the first tertiary educational institution in Vietnam to offer college, graduate and post-graduate programmes on Southern Khmer language, culture and art.

The project, which cost VND58 billion (US$ 2.7 million) and has the capacity for roughly 600 students, has a total floor area of 1.3 hectares.

The facility was constructed with a view to facilitate raising awareness and contribute to maintaining and promoting Southern Khmer culture.

Addressing the ceremony, Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan said that the establishment of the Faculty of Southern Khmer Language – Culture – Art shows the interest of Party and State on 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam and contributes to developing the culture of Southern Khmer in particular and 54 Vietnamese ethnic groups in general.

On the occasion, the Deputy PM also presented ten scholarships to ten poor students who have overcome difficulties to achieve outstanding academic performance in Tra Vinh University.
