The success of the surgery will bring hope to thousands of patients diagnosed with heart diseases.

The 37 year old patient in Ha Nam province was born with ostium secundum atrial septal defect. The doctors had to choose to perform open heart surgery as the patient’s foramen ovale is quite large with thin edges, which can not be filled by other common operations.

With assistance from the Hanoi Heart Hospital, doctors and surgeons successfully completed the surgery after three hours. The patient is now reported in stable condition and is expected to be discharged from hospital within the next ten days.

According to Dr. Nguyen Sinh Hien, deputy director of the Hanoi Heart Hospital, patients with ostium secundum atrial septal defect should undergo surgery early in their childhood to avoid dilated cardiomyopathy and pulmonary artery pressure as well as heart failure.

The success of the complex surgery will facilitate creating favourable conditions for the Friendship Hospital to perform more open heart surgeries and other high-tech cardiological procedures in the future, Hien added.

Dr. Le Van Thach, director of the Friendship Hospital said that the hospital has been preparing to perform cardiovascular surgeries since 1998 and with technology transferred from the Hanoi Heart Hospital, the hospital now has adequate capabilities to perform open heart surgeries.

In the coming years, the hospital will further develop its techniques to perform open heart surgeries on the elderly and patients with congenital heart diseases as well as other heart defects, while gradually striving to become one of the leading cardiovascular centres of the nation, Thach said.
