Creating smoke-free destinations to elevate tourism

The Fund for the Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms, under the Ministry of Health, has partnered with several cities to launch a campaign aimed at strengthening the enforcement of smoke-free environments in restaurants, hotels, and public spaces.

“No Smoking” signs are now prominently displayed across restaurants and hotels in Da Nang City.

This initiative supports the implementation of the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention and Control and contributes to the development of civilised, friendly, and safe tourist destinations.

Creating healthier public spaces for visitors and locals alike

In today’s health-conscious society, where quality of life and sustainable living are increasingly prioritised, the preservation of clean air has become more urgent than ever. Tobacco smoke remains one of the silent threats to this goal.

Phan Thi Hai, Deputy Director of the Fund, emphasised that despite decades of warnings, tobacco continues to inflict significant damage on public health, the economy, and society.

Globally, tobacco use claims over 8 million lives annually, including around 1.3 million non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke.

A smoke-free setting enhances the appeal of tourism and hospitality services. Each “No Smoking” sign is not merely a regulation—it is a symbol of respect and communal care.

In Viet Nam alone, tobacco use results in approximately 103,000 deaths each year—nearly 290 per day. Beyond the tragic loss of life, the economic toll is immense, encompassing healthcare costs, reduced productivity, fire-related damages, and environmental pollution.

For the tourism and service sectors, tobacco smoke undermines the value of public spaces, diminishes service quality, and tarnishes the professional image of businesses, ultimately detracting from the visitor experience.

The campaign promotes the message: “Smoke-Free Tourism – Embracing a Green, Clean, and Safe Life.” Establishing smoke-free environments is a vital step in safeguarding public health, particularly for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and service workers. It also reinforces legal compliance and fosters a sense of social responsibility.

Recent surveys indicate that hotels and restaurants are among the highest-risk venues for passive smoke exposure in Viet Nam. To address this, a ranking system for “Outstanding Smoke-Free Hotels” is being proposed to recognise exemplary establishments and promote the humanitarian goal of protecting public health within the tourism industry.

Smoke-free hotels not only benefit guests but also safeguard staff—the backbone of service excellence. This commitment contributes to long-term brand value and enhances international reputation.

Aligned with the principles of green and sustainable tourism, the campaign helps cities elevate their image as clean and civilised destinations while protecting the health of millions of annual visitors.

Organisers have called on local authorities and relevant agencies to intensify inspections, commend compliant businesses, and enforce penalties for violations.

Public education on the dangers of tobacco should be integrated into cultural, educational, and tourism programmes. With the active involvement of local governments, departments, and businesses, tourist cities can become shining examples of smoke-free living.

Hotel, restaurant, and attraction owners are encouraged to establish clear “No Smoking” policies, display signage prominently, and train staff to engage respectfully with smoking patrons.

Ultimately, building a smoke-free environment requires the participation of every resident and visitor. Collective action is essential to discourage smoking in public spaces and to remind one another of our shared duty to protect the environment. A smoke-free city is not only a healthier city—it is one defined by civility, compassion, and collective responsibility.
