Cooperation to improve health of adolescents and women in Viet Nam

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Organon & Co. officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), on November 17, on expanding access to accurate, timely, and youth-friendly information on sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights for adolescents and young people across Viet Nam.

The event highlighted the crucial role of access to information in enabling young people to make informed decisions about their bodies, their health, and their futures.
The event highlighted the crucial role of access to information in enabling young people to make informed decisions about their bodies, their health, and their futures.

Although Viet Nam has made progress in antenatal care and safe childbirth, disparities persist between adolescents and ethnic minority communities. Addressing adolescent pregnancy, access to contraception and bodily autonomy therefore remains key to ensuring equal rights for all.

Against this backdrop, the partnership aims to promote comprehensive, evidence-based sexual and reproductive health education; address gaps in knowledge and access to essential services, including family planning services for adolescents and young people; support policies that reflect the realities and needs of young people in a shifting demographic context; and foster the participation of young people and women in shaping policy programmes that improve health and advance their reproductive rights and choices.

The MOU outlines implementation through three strategic areas: generating data to inform policy; strengthening systems and capacities; and enhancing community education alongside innovation.

At the event, Vo thi Thuy Ha, General Director of Organon Viet Nam, stressed that access to accurate information is the foundation of health equity. She said the partnership aims to ensure that every Vietnamese woman has the knowledge and confidence to make informed choices about her reproductive health.

Also speaking at the ceremony was Matt Jackson, UNFPA Representative in Viet Nam. He affirmed the organisation’s continued commitment to ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, and every young person can realise their full potential.

“This lies at the heart of UNFPA’s commitment to achieving its three transformative goals by 2030: ending unmet need for contraception, ending preventable maternal deaths, and ending gender-based violence,” he emphasised.

The event brought together representatives from UNFPA, Organon, other UN agencies, the General Department of Population, the General Statistics Office of Viet Nam, and population experts, underscoring the importance of cross-sectoral cooperation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, especially those relating to health, education, and gender equality.

The memorandum of understanding takes effect from November 2025, with both parties committed to ongoing evaluation and improvement of joint initiatives to ensure lasting impact.
