Initial results
Hong Nam commune is a fairly large longan-growing area of Hung Yen City, Hung Yen Province, with an area of about 200 hectares; mainly fragrant varieties of longan with good quality.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Hong Nam commune, Nguyen Ngoc Hung, said that for many years, Hung Yen City has supported farmers to establish cooperatives, plant and care for "nhan long" (big-sized longan) trees, according to the VietGap process.
Along with that, the functional agencies of Hung Yen Province helped farmers in Hong Nam commune, build and compile a geographical indication dossier for the Hung Yen longan area, the export longan growing area, and participate in the construction and development of Hung Yen longan trademark.
Up to now, Hong Nam commune has seven cooperatives producing longan; the growing area of longan according to the VietGap process is more than 137 ha, increasing the value of longan.

Chairman of the Board of Directors, cum director of Ne Chau Longan Cooperative, Hong Nam Commune, Tran Thi Bac said: Since 2016, when Ne Chau Longan Cooperative was established and transferred the technology of growing longan according to the VietGap Process, the productivity and quality of longan in Ne Chau village was improved and enhanced. Longan products are certified to meet VietGap and OCOP standards at a 3-star level.
More and more businesses and traders come to sign contracts and order products with Ne Chau Longan cooperative. Through distribution channels, longan is put into supermarkets, e-commerce trading floors, trade centres, and fairs at high prices, bringing economic benefits to members of the cooperative.
Therefore, the number of longan growing households registered to participate in cooperatives is increasing. Up to now, Ne Chau Longan Cooperative has 39 members, with an area of about 18 hectares, with an annual output of about 300 tonnes, which is always sold out, with a price about 20% higher than the market price.
Le Van Thang, Director of Dong Tao Chicken Breeding and Trading Cooperative, Khoai Chau District shared: The successful building of the local collective trademark 'Dong Tao Chicken', Khoai Chau District, Hung Yen Province has accelerated the process of applying technical advances in animal husbandry, improve productivity and quality of products; thereby, increasing the value and reputation of Dong Tao chicken products on the market, increasing incomes and improving the quality of life of people in the region.
At the same time, the building of the local collective trademark 'Dong Tao Chicken' also contributes to preserving and promoting the genetic resources of this rare chicken breed, with a long history.
Over the past years, Hung Yen province has paid attention to directing functional agencies to carry out the task of researching legal provisions on the protection of geographical indications and supporting registration for the protection of geographical indications for agricultural products.

At the same time, the province has also focused on training and professional training on intellectual property, protection, management and development of intellectual property for specific local products; implement activities to protect intellectual property rights, prevent acts of infringing upon intellectual property rights; organising exhibitions, supporting the construction of a system of codes and barcodes to help manage, monitor, trace the origin, and improve the prestige and value of products.
The Department of Science and Technology of Hung Yen Province has implemented several projects, and tasks of disseminating and applying technical advances, to improve the productivity, quality and efficiency of key plant varieties and livestock in the province.
Up to now, the Department of Science and Technology of Hung Yen province has supported the registration of intellectual property rights for 31 key products, specific to the province.
The province has supported the conservation and restoration of plant varieties and livestock with good quality and potential, such as Hung Yen fragrant glutinous rice, Dong Tao chicken, and Hung Yen egg-shaped lychees.
Promoting support for the construction, protection and development of trademarks
Intellectual property is always a new and difficult field; In addition to trademarks that have been effectively exploited after being protected, there are still several recognised product and goods trademarks, but the maintenance and development of trademarks still have difficulties.
To continue to improve the quality, value and competitiveness of trademarks in the market; especially handicraft products, fine arts, agricultural products and specialities of Hung Yen province, Director of Hung Yen Department of Science and Technology, Tran Tung Chuan said: In the coming years, Hung Yen province will focus on implementing the Hung Yen Provincial Intellectual Property Development Programme from 2021 to 2025, with a vision to 2030, with many solutions. Which, the focus is raising people's awareness about the construction, management and development of trademarks in general and agricultural products in particular, applying technical advances, and quality management systems to produce clean, safe and quality products.

The province will also strengthen the roles and responsibilities of organisations managing geographical indications, continuing to survey and evaluate the possibility of developing trademarks and brands of several products of high economic value, especially products in the province's OCOP programme.
In addition, the province will promote training and guidance for trademark owners and manufacturers of protected products to proactively improve product quality and effectively use logos, labels and trademark identification signs in production and business; build and trace products, link product identification in the product supply chain, participate in a certification program according to product traceability standards; support productions and business organisations and individuals to protect domestic and international trademarks.
Striving to 2025, Hung Yen Province has more products granted with geographical indication certificates; collective trademarks. There are from 10 to 15 products registered for the protection of intellectual property rights. The province strives to support for registration of protection abroad for at least one protected geographical indication or certification mark for key products with export potential.
